Training tips

1-Be cosistent- When training your dog always use the same command word for a specific task. If there are several family members involved in the training be sure that everyone uses the same words.

2-Keep your commands short- The basic four commands are "come", "wait", "stay" and "down".
If you are teaching the "come" command, for example, say first the pet's name to get his/her attention, then the word "come".  "Rover, come"
Do NOT repeat the command.  It should be "Rover, come" and NOT "Rover, come, come here boy".
For commands that require the dog to stay and you to leave, like "wait" and "stay", omit the pet's name.  For example, the "stay" command. You should say "stay" while placing the palm of your hand in front of the dog's face.  Just say "stay", do NOT say "stay, stay , stay".  When leaving the dog just turn around and walk away, do NOT walk away facing the dog, this will encourage the dog to go with you.   If the dog follows you (someone will let you know) bring the dog back to the starting place and start again.
Know the difference between the "stay and" "wait" commands.  the "wait" command is used only when another command will follow, for example; "wait..........Rover, come".  The stay command is used when no other command will follow, like in the long sit and down exercises.

3-Be patient- If things don't go well stop training before you get angry.  Never allow anger in a training session.
Besides, is bad for your blood pressure.

4-Praise- Once that the dog has performed the exercise correctly pet him/her by gently rubbing the shoulders and talk in a happy tone of voice.

5-Corrections- If the pet does something that requires a correction, it should be administer immediately.  Do not wait, if the correction is administered long after the bad behavior the dog will NOT be able to relate one to the other.

6-Training sessions- Dogs, like children have a short attention span.  Keep your training sessions about 10 to 15 minutes long and repeat them two or three times a day.  If the sessions are to long the dog will get bored.
