LET'S GO AND GET A DOG
So, you are thinking about getting a dog,
GREAT!!!
Now, let me ask you, why do you want to get a dog? Is it because you saw a certain dog in a movie or read about it in a book or saw a circus act with a cute smart dog?Well, these reasons are NOT sufficient to go and get a dog. Before you get a dog you must realize that when you get a dog you are making a commitment. A lot of people are not aware of what is involved in having a dog and after having it for a while realize that is too much work or trouble and then they get rid of the poor animal. That’s why animal shelters all over the country are full and thousands of dogs are euthanized each day.
Before you get a dog think about this:
1-Where do you live?
If you live in an apartment do not even consider getting a large breed.
2-Do you have children?
Children and dogs are a dangerous combination. Most children have no idea that the dog is a living thing, with feelings. I have seen many cases where a child hurts a dog (not on purpose) and the dog retaliates. If you have children you have to be very careful in selecting a dog.
3-Your character, are you mild mannered or strong and dominant person? Certain breeds are very strong and dominant; if you are a sensitive person don’t go for a dominant breed.
4-How’s your schedule?
If your working schedule demands that the dog is left alone for long periods of time you better consider getting a cat. A dog needs companionship, a dog left alone for too long may become destructive. You must have time to walk and play with him/her.
5-How’s your bank account?
Having a dog is expensive. You will need to get toys, dog food (bad idea to feed table scraps to a dog), veterinary bills (always big), training, etc.
6-Do you have patience?, you will need a lot of it.
You will have to put up with “accidents”, chewed furniture, barking and other not so cute habits of a puppy.
Please, before getting a dog think about it seriously; if possible, consult with a veterinary or a dog trainer.
